To our BookExpo, UnBound & BookCon community,

Booksellers, librarians, authors, publishers, fans and everyone passionate about this industry are what make these events so special. At every step and with every decision, we have you in mind, so it’s our responsibility to make sure that your health and safety come first at all times.

After many hours of conversation, we have decided to postpone BookExpo, UnBound and BookCon from May to July 22-26 at the Javits Center. We have been closely monitoring the outbreak of COVID-19 in New York and around the country. Following the guidance of health officials, we are now complying with the State’s request that large gatherings be postponed to ensure the well-being of everyone involved with our event.

Stay At Home: Some Things To Do During A Quarantine

If you’ve been paying attention to the recent news, the reports about the Coronavirus Pandemic are getting more and more alarming and it was only just the other day when large gatherings of people in our own NYC Metropolis have been banned. This means concerts, conventions, parades, festivals and generally packed bar and religious events. With this being the case, I’ve tossed together a hopefully helpful list of things you can do to keep yourself occupied during a potentially long hiatus from activities that normally happen during the course of our daily lives. Let’s go.

Shop For Essentials:
Before this gets too crazy you are going to want to get some quick shopping done for essential items. These include paper goods like toilet paper, paper towels and tissues. I’m not suggesting that you hoard the stuff of course since there is likely plenty to go around but get a big package of the stuff that will carry you for a few weeks while the stores still have ample supplies and deliveries coming in. As far as food goes, I recommend lots of different kinds of beans and use the store brand since they are often just as tasty and somewhat cheaper as well. I always keep a stock of black, kidney, chickpeas and lentils in the cabinets. I’d also advise some frozen veggies like broccoli, spinach, string beans etc. Provided you have room for them. Make sure that you have enough stuff for your pets as well since they cannot attend to themselves. Having just recently lost my beloved feline, I am heading into this solo so I’d also suggest you appreciate every moment you have with your fur babies. Let’s get onto this list of ideas.

The 2020 Tribeca Film Festival Has Been Postponed Due To Coronavirus Concerns

The Statement:
“We founded the Tribeca Film Festival as a way to heal our community after the devastation of the 9/11 attacks in 2001. We were determined to overcome our fear and anxiety by joining together. It is in our DNA to march forward while caring about our community, said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder and CEO of Tribeca Enterprises.

We have made the difficult decision to postpone the 19th Tribeca Film Festival (April 15-26) based on the announcement by Gov. Andrew Cuomo that events of 500 people or more are banned due to the spread of the novel coronavirus. We are committed to ensuring the health and safety of the public while also supporting our friends, filmmakers and storytellers who look to Tribeca as a platform to showcase their work to audiences. We will be back to you shortly with our plans.”

Please check the website linked below for the latest updates, ticket refund information and details about how we are moving forward.

Piercing Ken Thoughts: Considering just how many announcements that I’ve made based on the continued spread of this Coronavirus, I think at this point it might be safe to say that “2020 is cancelled” because so many events have been postponed or cancelled outright. I’m not just referring to things happening next week but also things that were still months away from happening. I’ve pretty much run out of closing editorial responses to these kinds of announcements and I was looking forward to seeing what this years even was to be about. Please stay tunes to our Events Calendar for any updated listings, I will be adding back in the cancelled stuff as soon as I learn about what their new dates are. Stay healthy out there.

The Press Release:
National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman on Thursday released the following statement regarding the 2019-20 NHL season:

“In light of ongoing developments resulting from the coronavirus, and after consulting with medical experts and convening a conference call of the Board of Governors, the National Hockey League is announcing today that it will pause the 2019 20 season beginning with tonight’s games.

“The NHL has been attempting to follow the mandates of health experts and local authorities, while preparing for any possible developments without taking premature or unnecessary measures. However, following last night’s news that an NBA player has tested positive for coronavirus — and given that our leagues share so many facilities and locker rooms and it now seems likely that some member of the NHL community would test positive at some point — it is no longer appropriate to try to continue to play games at this time.
